While delving into the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he set for Alien: Romulus that “if it can be practical, it will be practical,” he said. so the cast always acted opposite a physical representation of the xenomorph. Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used whenever possible to aid in later visual effects work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all of their blood is suspended in the air in long, blurry patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to take on spherical shapes, not spread out in long, flat chunks like in the film. Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and becomes ominous, as in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene. The characters for the most part are totally flaccid and devoid of any real character aside from Andy. I honestly had no emotional attachment to most of the characters and most of them were just annoying and dumb. The movie was tacky at times, seemed to take forever to get started, and relied too much on Alien franchise cliches to add any real color to the plot and script. The special effects were good enough and the design of the original xenomorph was great, although the facehuggers look worse in this movie than in Alien and Aliens for some reason. I’m not too excited about the current hype surrounding Romulus – it’s not a terrible movie but it’s not great either. As a huge fan of the originals, I came away disappointed.
